Duty-Free Importation

Do You Qualify for Duty-Free Clearance?

Returning Kenyan residents can import used household goods and a qualifying vehicle completely duty-free — one of the most valuable KRA concessions available. Here's exactly who qualifies and what the rules are.

The short version: If you are a Kenyan citizen who has lived outside Kenya for at least 2 years, you can ship your used personal household goods to Kenya without paying import duty. Your qualifying vehicle can also come in duty-free. This saving can run into hundreds of thousands of Kenyan shillings — the clearance rate reflects the process, not the duty.
✅ You Qualify If...
  • You are a Kenyan citizen returning to live in Kenya
  • You have lived outside Kenya for at least 2 continuous years
  • You can prove residency abroad via your Kenyan passport stamps
  • Your household goods have been owned and used for at least 1 year
  • Your vehicle is RHD, max 8 years old, and registered in your name for at least 1 year
  • You have a valid KRA PIN activated on both iTax and KenTrade
  • You are present in Kenya when your container is being cleared at Mombasa
  • You are named as both shipper AND consignee on the Bill of Lading
  • Non-Kenyan citizens with a valid Kenyan work permit (2+ years) also qualify
❌ Duty-Free Does NOT Apply If...
  • You have been away from Kenya for less than 2 years
  • Items are brand new — duty-free is for used personal effects only
  • Your vehicle is left-hand drive (LHD vehicles are not registerable in Kenya)
  • Your vehicle is older than 8 years from manufacture date at time of arrival
  • You are not present in Kenya at the time of customs clearance
  • You are not named as the consignee on the Bill of Lading
  • Items are commercial stock or goods for resale — duty-free covers personal household effects only
  • Your KRA PIN is not activated on KenTrade before the container arrives
⚠️ Important: You must be physically present in Kenya when your container is cleared at Mombasa Port. KRA will not release the container to a third party on your behalf for duty-free clearance. Plan your travel to Kenya to coincide with your container's estimated arrival — typically 40–45 days from UK departure. Azaanex will give you regular vessel tracking updates so you can time your arrival accurately.
Shipping Options

How to Ship Your Belongings — Returning Resident Shipping UK to Kenya

Most returning residents use sea freight — either LCL groupage for lighter loads or a full container for larger moves. Here's how each option works and when to choose which.

🚢
Sea Freight · UK Port → Mombasa
£2.50
per kg · LCL groupage · all-inclusive
40–45 Days Transit
  • LCL groupage — pay only for space you use. Minimum 50kg.
  • 20ft FCL container from £2,200 · 40ft FCL from £3,200
  • Ideal for furniture, appliances, clothing, kitchenware, books
  • Barrel shipping £160 per 220-litre barrel — popular for personal effects
  • 2 guaranteed UK sailings per month
  • KRA clearance via Azaanex at Mombasa Port or Nairobi ICD
  • Door-to-door delivery available across all 47 counties
✈️
Air Freight · Heathrow → JKIA · Urgent Items
£6.99
per kg · all-inclusive · 1kg minimum
3–5 Business Days
  • Best for items you need immediately on arrival — medicines, documents, essentials
  • Clothing, electronics, baby items while sea freight is in transit
  • Weekly Friday departures from Heathrow to JKIA Nairobi
  • Delivered Wednesday — 3 business days UK to Kenya door
  • KRA clearance at JKIA via Azaanex — included in rate
  • Many returning residents combine: essentials by air, bulk by sea
  • Minimum 1kg · no maximum

💡 Pro Tip — Most Returning Residents Do Both

Ship essentials and immediate-need items by air (3–5 days, £6.99/kg), then send the bulk of household effects — furniture, appliances, clothing — by sea in a container (40–45 days). This way you have your basics on arrival while the heavy stuff is in transit. Tell us your full list and we'll advise the most cost-effective split.

Step by Step

How Your UK–Kenya Move Works with Triple A

From packing in the UK to delivery at your Kenya address — the complete process managed by one team from Southall to Mombasa, with no handoffs to unknown parties.

1
Book & Get Your Moving Quote
Contact Triple A with your rough inventory — furniture, appliances, clothing, vehicles. We advise whether LCL groupage or a full container (20ft or 40ft) makes the most sense financially, and confirm whether you qualify for returning resident shi[pping UK to Kenya duty-free status. We'll ask for your intended Kenya arrival date so we can align your container's sailing schedule.
UK — Contact Us First
2
Confirm Your KRA PIN & KenTrade Registration
For duty-free clearance, your KRA PIN must be activated on KenTrade — the Kenya government's single-window trade portal — before your container arrives at Mombasa. If you don't have a KRA PIN or it's not activated on KenTrade, Azaanex will guide you through the process. This must be done before sailing.
⚠️ Must Be Done Before Container Sails
3
Goods Received at Southall Warehouse
Deliver your packed goods to Unit Z01, Canal Yard, Southall UB2 5NA, or we arrange UK collection. We prepare your packing list — a comprehensive itemised inventory is essential for returning resident duty-free status. If shipping a vehicle, it's delivered to our port liaison at Southampton or Tilbury. KEBS/QISJ pre-shipment inspection arranged for the vehicle before loading.
Southall Warehouse — UK Side
4
Container Loaded & Sails to Mombasa
Your goods are loaded into the container — LCL alongside others, or your full FCL. The vessel sails from a UK port (Southampton, Tilbury, or Felixstowe) to Mombasa Port. Transit time is 40–45 days. We send you vessel tracking details and the estimated arrival date — which you need to plan your own travel to Kenya.
40–45 Days UK Port to Mombasa
5
IDF Pre-Filed — Azaanex Begins Clearance
Azaanex files your Import Declaration Form (IDF) via KRA iCMS before the vessel arrives. Your returning resident status is declared, packing list submitted, and KRA pre-clearance is initiated. You receive a WhatsApp update confirming vessel arrival and clearance commencement.
Mombasa Port — Pre-Arrival Filing
6
You Attend Customs Clearance at Mombasa
You must be present in Kenya when your container is cleared. Azaanex coordinates your attendance with KRA customs — you don't need to know the process, just be available. KRA may conduct a physical examination of the container. Azaanex manages the entire customs interaction on your behalf. Typical clearance: 3–5 working days after vessel berths, or faster with pre-clearance.
⚠️ Your Presence Required in Kenya
7
Container Released & Delivered to Your Home
KRA release order issued. Azaanex coordinates with Kenya Ports Authority for container exit. Your container is trucked from Mombasa to your Kenya address, or transferred to Nairobi ICD via SGR if heading to Nairobi. Optional door-to-door delivery to any of Kenya's 47 counties. Your vehicle is driven off RoRo or unstuffed from container and ready to register with NTSA.
Door-to-Door — All 47 Counties
What Can You Bring?

Duty-Free — What Qualifies

Duty-free importation covers used personal household effects and one qualifying vehicle. Here's what's included and what's excluded — getting this right at packing stage avoids duty assessments at Mombasa Port.

🛋️
Furniture
Sofas, beds, wardrobes, dining tables, desks — all qualify if used and owned for at least 1 year. New furniture attracts standard duty.
🍳
Kitchen & Appliances
Pots, pans, kitchen equipment, microwave, washing machine, fridge — used appliances qualify. New appliances will be dutiable.
👕
Personal Clothing
Personal clothing and shoes for you and your family qualify as personal effects. Commercial clothing quantities (mitumba) do not qualify for duty-free.
💻
Electronics — Personal Use
Personal laptops, TVs, phones, tablets qualify as household effects if used. KEBS compliance documentation required for electronics — Triple A arranges this.
📚
Books, Art & Personal Effects
Books, paintings, personal mementos, sports equipment, musical instruments — all qualify as personal household effects under the returning resident exemption.
🚗
One Vehicle (Qualifying)
One RHD vehicle, max 8 years old, owned and registered in your name for at least 1 year. Must have QISJ pre-shipment inspection. LHD vehicles cannot be registered in Kenya.
⚠️ Brand new items attract full duty — even for returning residents. If KRA's physical examination of your container identifies brand new items (still in original packaging, price tags attached), those items will be assessed for import duty, VAT, and levies at standard rates — even within an otherwise duty-free container. Pack accordingly.
Documentation Required

Documents Needed for Returning Resident Clearance

Azaanex prepares most clearance documentation on your behalf. These are the documents you need to provide — prepare them before your container sails to avoid delays at Mombasa Port.

🛂
Original Passport
Your Kenyan passport showing travel history and absence from Kenya for at least 2 years. KRA will verify your residency abroad via passport stamps — bring original, not a copy.
🆔
KRA PIN Certificate
Your Kenya Revenue Authority PIN, activated on both iTax and KenTrade before the container arrives. Azaanex guides you through activation if needed.
📋
Comprehensive Packing List
Complete itemised inventory of every item in the container — description, quantity, estimated age. This is your single most important document for duty-free clearance. Triple A helps you prepare this correctly.
🚢
Bill of Lading
Must show YOU as both the shipper (sender in the UK) and the consignee (receiver in Kenya). This is a hard requirement for duty-free clearance — a third party named as consignee disqualifies the duty-free status.
📄
Declaration of Intent to Reside
A signed declaration confirming you are permanently returning to Kenya and changing residence. KRA may request additional proof of your intent to reside — utility bills, lease agreements, or employment confirmation help.
🏠
Kenya Residence Proof
Confirmed address in Kenya — rental lease, property ownership document, or host family letter. You must have a delivery address arranged before your container arrives at Mombasa.
🚗
V5C Logbook (Vehicle)
UK vehicle registration document. Must show the vehicle registered in your name. QISJ pre-shipment inspection certificate required. Proof of ownership for at least 1 year.
QISJ Inspection Certificate
Pre-shipment roadworthiness inspection for your vehicle by QISJ (a KEBS-approved UK inspection body). Mandatory for all Kenya-bound vehicles. Triple A coordinates this from Southall.
🔌
KEBS PVoC for Electronics
Electronics in your container (TVs, laptops, etc.) require KEBS Certificate of Conformity. Arranged by Triple A via QISJ or SGS in the UK before departure. Avoids a 15% penalty at Mombasa.
Our In-House Clearing Partner

Azaanex handles
your clearance.

Most UK shipping companies pass your container to an unnamed Mombasa clearing broker after it arrives — meaning you're dealing with a stranger in Kenya at one of the most stressful points of your move.

Triple A works exclusively with Azaanex Holdings Ltd — our own KRA-licensed clearing company in Nairobi. Azaanex knows your shipment from the UK end, has your packing list and passport details before the vessel berths, and manages your clearance as a named accountable partner — not a subcontractor you've never met.

For returning resident shipping UK to Kenya, Azaanex also manages the KenTrade registration and coordinates your attendance at customs clearance — guiding you through every step so you know exactly what to expect on the day.

KRA Licensed — Not a Subcontractor
Azaanex Holdings Ltd is Triple A's own company. KRA-licensed at Mombasa Port and Nairobi ICD. Named and accountable — not an anonymous broker.
KenTrade Registration Guided
Your KRA PIN must be activated on KenTrade before the container arrives. Azaanex guides you through this process — most returning residents don't know it's required until it's too late.
IDF Pre-Filed — Faster Clearance
Import Declaration Form submitted via KRA iCMS before the vessel berths. Processing starts immediately on arrival — not days later when a broker finally files it.
You Attend — We Guide You Through It
KRA requires you to be present for returning resident clearance. Azaanex tells you exactly when and where to be, what to bring, and manages all customs communication on your behalf.
Port Storage Avoided — Pre-Clearance
You only get 4 free days at Mombasa Port before daily storage fees start. Azaanex pre-files documentation so clearance starts immediately on arrival — minimising demurrage risk.
Common Questions

Returning Resident Shipping UK to Kenya — FAQs

Do I really pay zero import duty as a returning resident?
Yes — qualifying returning Kenyan residents can import used personal household goods completely duty-free. This exempts you from import duty (which can be 25–35% on many goods), VAT (16%), and related levies on those items. Clearance agent fees (Azaanex's service) still apply — this covers the process of clearance, not the duty itself. Brand new items in your container will still attract full duty even within a duty-free container.
Do I have to be at Mombasa Port when my container clears?
Yes. KRA requires the returning resident to be physically present in Kenya during customs clearance for duty-free status. You don't need to stand at the port gate — Azaanex manages the port interaction — but you must be available in Kenya if KRA requires your attendance or has questions. You must also be named as the consignee on the Bill of Lading. Plan your travel to arrive in Kenya before your container's estimated arrival at Mombasa.
How long do I have to clear my container at Mombasa before storage fees start?
You have 4 free days at Mombasa Port after the vessel berths before Kenya Ports Authority storage charges begin. These fees accumulate daily and can become significant quickly. Azaanex pre-files your IDF before the vessel arrives, so clearance processing begins on the day the ship berths — not after a broker eventually gets around to filing. This is why using a clearing agent who pre-files is critical for returning residents.
Can I ship my car as a returning resident?
Yes — one qualifying vehicle can be imported duty-free. Requirements: right-hand drive only, maximum 8 years old from manufacture date at time of Mombasa arrival (2019 or newer in 2026), registered in your name for at least 1 year, and pre-shipment inspected by QISJ before UK departure. Left-hand drive vehicles cannot be registered in Kenya. Triple A ships vehicles by RoRo from £1,195 and coordinates the full QISJ inspection and KEBS paperwork from Southall.
Should I ship a 20ft or 40ft container?
A 40ft container (approximately 67 cubic metres) is almost always better value per cubic metre than a 20ft (approximately 33 cubic metres) — even if you don't fill it completely. If you have less than a full 20ft of goods, LCL groupage sea freight (£2.50/kg) is often the most economical option. If you have more than half a 40ft container's worth of goods — especially with a vehicle — a 40ft FCL is usually the right call. Tell us your rough inventory list and we'll calculate which option saves you the most.
What is KenTrade and why does my KRA PIN need to be activated on it?
KenTrade is Kenya's National Electronic Single Window System — the government portal that integrates KRA customs clearance with other agencies. All commercial imports, including returning resident containers, are processed through KenTrade. If your KRA PIN is not activated on KenTrade before your container arrives at Mombasa, Azaanex cannot file the import declaration and your container will sit at the port accruing storage fees. Azaanex will guide you through the KenTrade activation process well in advance of your sailing date.
How much does it cost to ship a 40ft container from the UK to Kenya?
A 40ft full container (FCL) from the UK to Mombasa costs from £3,200 all-inclusive — covering UK loading, ocean freight, and KRA customs clearance via Azaanex. On top of this, Azaanex's returning resident clearance fee at Mombasa is from KES 700,000 for a 40ft container. For duty-free qualifying returning residents, no import duty is payable on used household goods — the clearance fee covers the process only. Contact us with your inventory list for an exact quote.
How long does it take for my container to arrive in Kenya from the UK?
Ocean transit from the UK (Southampton, Tilbury, or Felixstowe) to Mombasa Port is 40–45 days. Add 3–5 working days for KRA clearance at Mombasa once the vessel berths, then 1–2 days for trucking to Nairobi or upcountry. Total door-to-door from UK to your Kenya address is typically 50–55 days. We send you vessel tracking details so you can plan your own travel to Kenya to coincide with your container's arrival.
